Goin up to coles for a bag of frozen peas The lady at the counter says "Put your mask on please, I know that you're a local, don't give me that disease Why don't you just stay at home?" Feelin so stressed, don't want another night in Went out for a walk to try unwinding I ran into Karen "I've walked every street in Brighton" Why didn't I just stay home? Every night is all the same, simulation in my brain. Endless scrolling on my phone, in my room I'm staying home. Isolation's here to stay, another month, a week, a day. Every day is all the same, with your hour and 5k(m). 120 straight, allaying all my fears. We're keeping the course 'til we get the all clear. I wanna go to fed square, wanna get on the beers. Instead I might just stay home.... Forget about security, forget the hotels. Here's to you and yours and here's to good health. Tonight we're going a little bit higher up the shelf. Tonight I'm still at home....

about

Written over a two-week period during Melbourne's hard lockdown in October 2020;

"The Crumple Zone" was primarily conceived as a set of daily goals; writing, arranging and recording a track per day, in an attempt to inject some creativity and normality into life. There were no set pieces, sounds or genres in mind, the only rule was that each "song" had to be completed within the day.

"I would hum a melody while walking in my neighbourhood, then work out the chord progressions at home on guitar." A song could take half an hour to 7 hours to complete per night, depending on the arrangement and tracking. They range from the slower, reverb drenched "Ghost Ship", indie guitar madness of "In my room", the hypnotic krautrock of "Psychonauts" to the metronomic drone of "One Hand Clapping".

The first side recounts some memories of my year in lockdown; the risks of straying outside, the final days of freedom and the joy of liberation.Things soon take a turn for the worse, as our characters are returned to a strange new reality, not quite the "lockdown" that we perceived earlier, but a prison nonetheless, a "lockdown" of the mind, brought on by Alzheimer's and dementia.
Parallels can also be drawn with so called "Australia's" border policy, a cruel and inhumane torturefest that has destroyed countless lives and caused untold misery and suffering.

Finally, there is only hyperreality, that confusing state, where we no longer know what is imagined or real.

In summary: "Although physically we might be constrained and locked down, there are others out there, trapped in a far scarier and nightmarish place."

This album then, is for them.
You are not forgotten.
